Talisker Distillery: Scotland Castles and Drams Tour

After a beautiful drive through the wonders of the Isle of Skye and the Red and Black Cuillin Mountains, you come to the little loch-side town of Carbost and the island's only whisky distillery Talisker. Situated on the edge of Loch Harport, it is a picture perfect scene for a castles and drams tour.

GlenDronach Distillery: Scotland Castles and Drams Tour

GlenDronach may be one of the best whiskies you never heard of - a dram heavily influenced by it's sherry casks roots. There is so much to like about this out of the way Highland distillery. The old warehouses have a charm, the tour guide brought a real passion for the spirits, the tasting options were versatile, and the whiskies are world-class. The only thing I thought was a bit of a let down was the 1960's relic of a building as it's centerpiece and the pot still showing some wear. But what this building produces makes this tour one you should definitely consider.

Glenfarclas Distillery: Scotland Castles and Drams Tour Planner

There are still around 10 independent distilleries in Scotland. Glenfarclas is most likely the oldest still run by the original family that started it in 1836 (there are reports that stills existed since around 1791 on this spot).  I had a lot of suggestions that I needed to take this tour and it was an interesting bookend to a day with the ultra-modern Macallan Distillery.

The Macallan Distillery: Scotland Castles and Drams Tour Planner

The Macallan is one of the most famous whiskies in the world. But for me, the fascination with this spirit came from it being featured in multiple James Bond movies, most notably SPECTRE and Skyfall. This very approachable whisky can be found on the shelves of just about every bar that sells scotch and it's older versions are some of the most prized whiskies in the world, with a bottle recently selling for $1.1 million.

Glenfiddich Distillery: Scotland Castles and Drams Tour Planner

As I arrived in Speyside, the most populated area in Scotland for whisky distilleries, the only question was where do I start my distillery tour quest? Having to plan around enjoying drams and then needing to drive to my B&B a few miles down the road in Aberlour, I decided to start the day with Glenfiddich (3rd out of 15 distilleries on my Castles and Drams Tour) and then walk around town and also see Balvenie Castle.

Dufftown Experience: The Whisky Capital of the World

When looking at a map and trying to plot out where to start when entering the whisky paradise known as Speyside, Dufftown might not immediately jump out at you, but it is a fantastic place to start. There are no less than 20 major distilleries within 15 miles in any direction and 3 within walking distance.

Dalwhinnie Distillery: Scotland Castles and Drams Tour Planner

Climbing the mountains from Stirling, the first major distillery you meet is also the highest distillery in Scotland. Dalwhinnie (#2 of the 15 distilleries on my Castles and Drams Tour) was an early favorite of mine. Not smoky, but instead a subtle and approachable, well-aged whisky. This was a tour I was looking forward to!

Blair Athol Distillery: Scotland Castles and Drams Tour Planner

Driving north on the whisky truck laden A9 from Glasgow, Stirling, or Edinburgh, you might not realize it, but there are a couple of whisky distilleries along the route to Speyside. In fact two of them are within a couple of miles of each other. Edradour Distillery might be the best known, but Blair Athol is probably consumed more than you know. And it is right on the main drag through Pitlochry.

Dingle Distillery Tour Planner and Experience

First off, let me say you won't be disappointed with your stay in the town of Dingle. My plan to add a couple days in Ireland turned out to be a big teaser. As you'll read in my upcoming blog posts about my castle drive, cruising the Ring of Kerry and taking in the town of Dingle, I had a blast - and I most definitely will be back, with much more time to spend!
