About Micil Distillery
It is amazing to think that a town as big as Galway, in a whiskey-loving country like Ireland, hadn’t seen a whiskey distillery in a century. But thanks to Micil Distillery, all of that has now changed. The distillery was named in honor of the founder’s great-great-great-grandfather, Micil Mac Chearra, who distilled illicit poitín in the hills of Connemara over 170 years ago. The tradition passed down through six generations, and today Pádraic and Jimín Ō Griallais are breaking new ground by distilling legally under a license.
With all of that rich tradition behind them, there are plenty of stories of illicit distilling during the tour. The distillery’s small footprint means that there isn’t a lot of walking on this tour: in fact, the distillery equipment is located downstairs, so you get a bird's-eye view of the distillation process. From the comfort of the bar area, you will have multiple chances to taste whiskey and poitín while enjoying a guided tasting and an opportunity to chat with your tour mates.
